Electronic monitoring and enforcement of road safety
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) notification G.S.R. 575(E).11th August 2021- Rule 167A on electronic monitoring and enforcement of road safety states the provisions for placement of electronic enforcement devices. The notification extends to speed camera, closed-circuit television camera, speed gun, body wearable camera, dashboard camera, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), Weigh In Machine (WIM) among similar technologies to name a few. It directs state governments to ensure the placement of electronic enforcement devices at highrisk and high-density corridors on national highways and state highways. It will also entail placements at critical junctions at least in major cities with larger than one million population including specified 132 cities. The footage gathered will be used to issue challans for varied offences ranging from not driving within the prescribed speed limit to driving a vehicle exceeding permissible weight. It will also extend to driving a vehicle with a load that extends beyond the sides of the body or to the front or to the rear or in height beyond the permissible limit (subsection (1A) of section 194) and failure of providing passage to an emergency vehicle, for instance.
