Mumbai signs up for TUMI
Mumbai has signed up for the The Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI). Mumbai is the first city in the country to host a curated work plan for the deployment of e-buses. TUMI entails designing a technical assistance plan in tandem with a long term adoption roadmap for the city. BEST is known to have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to join TUMI in an initiative led by Aaditya Thackeray, Minister of Environment, Tourism and Protocol, Government of Maharashtra. The minister said, “The transition to electric is necessary for all vehicle segments, big or small, in order to fast-track the achievement of climate and air quality goals. E-buses can play a significant role in this transition.” A short term goal has been set to achieve the transition to e-buses in 20 ‘deep dive cities’ which will be scaled up to an additional 100 cities by the end of 2022. By 2025, over one lakh electric buses are to be prepared for tenders and procurement. The project falls under the Action towards Climate-friendly Transport (ACT) initiative launched at the UNSG Summit in September 2019.
