Ashok Leyland Ltd. collaborat­ed with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. Researcher­s at the National Centre for Combustion Research and Developmen­t (NCCRD) will support the commercial­isation of its patented combustion technology called the ‘Swirl

Mesh Lean Direct Injection (LDI) system’. This indigenous­lydesigned, Micro Gas Turbine technology will be used for developing a series of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). After the technology was demonstrat­ed on the lab scale, ALL signed a letter of support to develop this technology for the heavy vehicles segment with NCCRD, IIT Madras. It also handed over its nine-meter passenger electric bus to NCCRD which will be converted as part of the exercise. These vehicles will be called ‘Turbine Electric vehicles’ (TEV).
