Consumer Voice

Preliminary Action

- Project Implementation by Hemant Upadhyay Gopal Ravi Kumar Subas Tiwari

Of over a dozen organizations bidding to implement the project, Team Voice was finally given the responsibility to conduct the financial literacyawareness programme in Delhi for about six months.

The project began in May and the first task at hand was the identification of areas where real impact could be made. The team started the baseline survey through secondary research of all accessible data and also connected with Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board and District Information Office. They also obtained necessary information from social organizations that were already working in the urban-slum areas of Delhi. This helped in evaluating the methodologies that all such organizations were using to propagate various messages among communities at slums.

Looking at the objectives and the hypothetical impact analysis, the team zeroed in on Kusumpur Pahari, one of the largest slums in Delhi on DDA land near Vasant Vihar, south-west Delhi. The area has a population of more than 10,000 slum dwellers who have primarily migrated from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and Assam. Most of the adults from these slums work in nearby residential areas as drivers, servants, gardeners, sweepers, etc.

Content Strategy

After thorough research on the necessities of the slum dwellers, the team devised a few parameters to structure the content of the awareness programme. They sh ortlisted six domains on which the adolescents would be taught extensively – knowledge of these six domains was expected to make the maximum impact on the daily lives of the dwellers.

Thus, the primary content of the workshop revolved around: Opening a bank account Types of insurance Pradhan Mantri Jeewan Jyoti Bima Yojana Pradan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) Making a monthly budget Types of investments Ways to complain about grievances

With the objective of leaving behind quick-reference material for future, all attendees were given a 34-page resource book. The same also served as an exercise book during workshops. The content of the book covered subjects like money and banking, household economics, types of insurance, mutual funds, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeewan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Atal Pension Yojana (APY) and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY).
