FOR PHYSICOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS
Fineness | Heavy Metals | Matter Insoluble in Boiling Water | Moisture and Volatile Matter | Foreign Particles | Asbestine | Solubility of Colour | pH
As per Indian Standard, the residue of powder should not be more than two per cent by mass when passed through a sieve of 75 microns. It should not be more than 0.5 per cent by mass when passed through a sieve of 150 microns.
of performance on this parameter, Spinz is followed by Premium. The ‘fineness’ parameter is important because talcum powder is used directly on the skin and sometimes on delicate or sensitive areas of the body. It is also meant to add to physical comfort level.
Tests were carried out to check for the presence of arsenic and lead. Arsenic in talcum powder may cause harmful health effects. As per Indian Standard, arsenic shall not be more than 2 ppm in talcum powder. As for lead, it shall not be more than 20 ppm.
Matter Insoluble in Boiling Water (% by mass)
As per the Indian Standard, matter insoluble in boiling water should be a minimum 90 per cent by mass. It is a very important parameter to determine the quality of talcum powder.
Moisture and Volatile Matter
It shall be not more than two per cent by mass.
On visual examination, the talcum powder should be free from foreign particles.
All the brands were subjected to microscopic examination for possible presence of asbestine, a mineral compound known for its negative impact on human health.
