Precautions during Weaning
Weaning must start only after six months of age as it is the right time to introduce complementary food to the child. Avoid foods that have a high allergy risk – such as egg, wheat, mustard, sesame, celery, and fish – at the beginning of weaning. Recommended first foods include rice water, dal water, mashed potatoes, mashed bananas, and other fruits. Development and severity of allergy symptoms also depends on the amount of the food ingested. It is advisable to introduce small amounts of a new food item to the child. Watch out for any adverse effect and then slightly increase the amount.
