Eight brands tested

-

Coriander has a strong aroma but is revered also for its ‘cooling’ qualities. According to Ayurveda, powdered coriander is good for digestion. It also helps in purifying the blood and curing inflammation, fever and as well as various allergies. Coriander has its special position in many culinary preparations. It is added to many Indian dishes and also used for garnishing. Just a dash or two of this flavourful spice can add that little something extra to your food! When buying coriander powder off retail shelves, what attributes must one consider?

For one, moisture content must be within limit, since it affects the shelf life of the product. Adulteration by green colour as well as presence of dirt and dust are other factors regulated by the law. As standard practice, read the labels of the packet for nutritional information, ingredients, net quantity, storage information, and ‘best before’ information, among other things. The following report checks eight brands of coriander powder along these and other parameters to enable us consumers to make an informed choice.
