There have been hun­dreds of cases of con­sumers get­ting stuck due to false claims by builders and real es­tate de­vel­op­ers. Con­sumers in gen­eral have poor knowl­edge of the in­tri­ca­cies in­volved in the real es­tate busi­ness and are there­fore vul­ner­a­ble to be­ing mis­led or ex­ploited. Con­sumers gen­er­ally face of de­cided laws.

For con­sumers, the first-tier re­dres­sal is through bi­par­tite ne­go­ti­a­tions. Now, they have a sec­ond tier in the form of Real Es­tate Reg­u­la­tory Author­ity, which has come into force from 1 May 2016. There is also the op­tion to take cases to con­sumer courts or to civil courts, high courts and even the supreme court of In­dia.
