Three years back, S Kumar had installed a 1.25 kW solar rooftop spending about Rs 2 lakh. He believes the cost has now come down to less than Rs 1 lakh. He saves about Rs 1,000 a month and is planning to expand the system soon. He does self-maintenance and is happy about it as it does not involve any labour. What cost him some money was the unexpected replacement of an inverter, but this was an unusual circumstance according to Kumar. He is aware that he may have to change the battery, costing about Rs 18,000, every four years but is positive that these rates will also go down in the future with advancement in technologies.
