DECODING FOOD LABELS

Cakes

Which brands did not declare their sugar and salt?

Some of us may be vaguely conscious that eating a slice of packaged cake translates into putting extra sugar and salt in our diet. Just how much, though? Do we scan the information given on the packet? Do we compare the details given out by the various brands out there? Some of us may find that hard work, right? Given that nutrition labels are not always easy or simple enough to interpret, or standardised for enabling comparison among brands in a specific category, we have here culled out the essential details on the basis of which we as consumers can make informed and better choices. While declaration of sodium/salt on food products label is not mandatory as per Indian law, we believe that brands should go ahead and declare the same as it is a consumer-friendly practice.
