It’s a Happy New Year for AP, say predictions

- L. VENKAT RAM REDDY | DC HYDERABAD, MARCH 23

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who is facing dissidence within the party, after the Congress’ drubbing in the recent bypolls, has received slightly more cheerful news.

The Panchangam (Telugu almanac) foresees a bright future for the Chief Minister, saying that he will have a comfortable year ahead in the Nandana Nama Samvatsaram.

Acharya C.V.B. Subrahmanyam who read out the predictions promised a “stable government” in the state in the New Year as it is sukra dasha (good tidings) for the raja and the mantris. The planetary positions are favourable for a “corruption-free administration” and the politicians and the people will live with joy and happiness since there is anandam (happiness) within Nandana.

However, on the flip side, there were predictions of possible floods, communal disturbances and people not getting financial benefits they hope to get.

Dr Subrahmanyam delivered Panchanga Shravanam at the state govern- ment-organised Ugadi celebrations at Ravindra Bharati on Friday.

He also predicted good rainfall in the state, a bumper harvest for farmers, and peace, with just some minor troubles.

Besides the Chief Minister, PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana and several ministers attended the Panchanga Shravanam.

Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy, who looked visibly nervous when he arrived on the stage, was seen smiling as the predictions unfolded, especially when Dr Subrahmanyam said that the government will tame corruption.

Dr Subrahmanyam also predicted that the judiciary will further uphold its respect in the New Year. He said students of AP will excel in studies globally and bring laurels to the state and the country, particularly in science and technology sectors. He said several new industries will come up in the state this year and several defunct industries will be revived.

Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy, who later addressed the gathering, announced `1 crore for the renovation of Ravindra Bharathi.

“If required, the government will release another `1 crore to modernise the auditorium besides renovating Telugu Lalitha Kala Thoranam. We have sanctioned `42 crore in the recent Budget for the culture department to promote Telugu,” the CM said.

He also announced that the temple town of Tirupati will host the prestigious World Telugu Conference in December this year.
