It’s raining colours

Say hello to bright colours and happy pastel hues this monsoon

- SHAGUFTA KALIM

No doubt, the summer forced you to go with pastels and monotones, but the rains are here to let you embrace the brighter hues without any inhibition. Here’s the lowdown on how to decode the monsoon shade card and enjoy the season stylishly. Since we just saw a vibrant summer, why should the monsoon miss out on the brighter hues? For designer duo Manu and Mamta of Bella Ragazza, monotones will take a back seat and colours will be in this season. They say, “Happy shades like fuschia pink, orange and green are the best shades to flaunt now. Monsoon is the time to change your fashion statement. So choose lighter but pleasant and vibrant shades this monsoon.”

Designer Chhaya Mehrotra too recommends bright shades like coral, orange, yellow and marine blue for the rainy season. And, joining the colour happy chorus, designer Pam Mehta recommends, “The boring pastels are giving way to refreshing neons and primary colours. Neon orange, fuschia, red and green make the season more interesting. There is room for white and nude with strong contrast details of bold turquoise, yellows, purples and pinks to add flavour. The palette is not just vibrant and happy to look at but it also breaks the monotony of the colour chart being followed by the Indian fashionistas.”

However, every fashionably inclined mind is not willing to go sparkling bright. For instance, designer Ajiesh Oberoi prefers to stay neutral, and underlines it as ‘extremely feminine’. He feels, “Pastel colours are quite a hit during the monsoon. Light pastel yellow, orange, pink, green and blue are clear-cut classics. They offer diverse options which are girly but stylish, flirty yet subtle. The soft pastels look beautiful not only for daytime, but also for the evening. Elegant pastel colours in silk or chiffon gowns look great with bold metallic jewellery. Coordinating pastels with colour blocking sounds good.”

Designer duo Kapil and Monika too vouch for the pastel effect. Getting more specific, they point out, “Pastel purple and pastel orange are refreshing choices, while powder ice blue exudes a crystalline and frosty feel which is simple yet chic.”
