CHARGESHEET ON ADARSH TO BE FILED TODAY

- DC CORRESPONDENT MUMBAI, JULY 2

The CBI is expected to file a chargesheet in the Adarsh Society scam case on Tuesday. It has booked former CM Ashok Chavan and 13 others, and has arrested nine of the accused in the case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation is expected to file a chargesheet in the Adarsh Society scam case on Tuesday. It has booked former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and 13 others, and has arrested nine of the accused in the case, under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI had last month submitted to the court that it would file a chargesheet before Wednesday, saying that it needed prior sanction from the government before prosecuting the accused.

The court had at the time directed the CBI to file a chargesheet against those accused that did not need a sanction to be prosecuted.

CBI had in March this year arrested nine out of the 14 accused after receiving a rap on its knuckles from the High Court for not initiating action against the accused persons.

Meanwhile, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, an accused in the Adarsh scam, on Monday continued pointing fingers at his predecessor and Union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh for decisions taken while allotting land to the controversial housing society.

Mr Chavan, who was revenue minister during Mr Deshmukh’s tenure as CM from 1999 to 2003, told a judicial panel set up by the state government to probe the scam that he had only followed his predecessor’s “directions” while forwarding to the revenue department the letter sent by Adarsh society seeking allotment of government land.

Meanwhile, Congress on Monday played down reports of blame game among its Maharashtra leaders saying, “No chief minister has levelled any allegation against the other. Every CM is simply verifying his position which is being interpreted by people as blame game.”
