THE WEAVERS WOW
Igrew up amid the tea gardens of Assam and in close proximity to several weaver families. It was in those childhood days itself that I became curious about weaves, designs and style and became open to ideas about how they could be incorporated in garments. Later, I realised that an education in fashion design could help hone those ideas.
As I embarked on this path, I encountered the work of internationally renowned designer, the late Alexander McQueen. To me, the designs of this enfant terrible of the fashion world spoke of the aesthetic sophistication a woman could attain. The dresses he created expressed the dark side of life, yet they had a romantic aspect. Most of his designs were like paintings, and just as dramatic. But if I had to present just one last collection — something that will be passed on from one generation to the next and remembered forevermore as a classic — then I wish it would be something like a Wendell Rodricks line. Wendell has produced some of the finest and simplest garments ever, but they are classic enough to last you a lifetime. Today, the trend of layered clothing is a global phenomenon. We manufacture womenswear for Australia, Europe and other Western countries, and what’s popular abroad is all the rage here too. Dresses, tunics and leggings are loved by all age groups and we have the designs of Roberto Cavalli and Pucci to thank for infusing the trend with so much verve. Women are one of the most beautiful creations of nature… I love how everything from the earth to the sky, birds and animals can be used as inspiration in some form to create an ensemble that enhances the beauty of a woman.
