FEWER RAPES DUE TO QUICK POLICE ACTION, SAYS DGP

There were fewer rape cases in Andhra Pradesh this year compared to previous years, according to DGP V. Dinesh Reddy. He said on Monday that the state police was highly sensitive to crimes against women. Rapid action by the police after receiving a complaint had cut down incidents of rape by 7.8 per cent in 2012.

The DGP said that in order to increase access to, and accountabi­lity of, the police to women complainan­ts, a woman official will be appointed at the reception desk at each police station. He added that a model police station in Banjara Hills with a reception section and a technical section will be started soon.

In Andhra Pradesh, serious efforts by the police has brought down rape incidents, DGP V. Dinesh Reddy said on Monday.

According to the DGP, compared to 1,291 rape cases in 2011, 1,191 cases were reported up to November this year.

Incidents of abduction of women had decreased by 12.1 per cent with 1,020 cases this year as against 1,161 cases in 2011.

The news, however, is not good regarding other crimes against women. According to the annual crime data released by the DGP, there has been an overall increase in crimes against women, by 1.8 per cent. As against 22,179 cases reported in 2011, there were 22,585 cases of crime against women reported till November this year.

Mr Reddy said a unit will be set up in the CID that will specialise in crimes against women.
