- DR MUKTA SACHDEV DERMATOLOGIST

Now that you’re feeling all Christmassy with reds, greens and whites all around you, isn’t it tempting to go with the flow and have a little fun with your makeup? Most women and even some men are taking out some time to flaunt a party look whenever they are waltzing out for a social do. But, make sure you do it the right way and don’t end up looking like a Christmas tree yourself. Dermatologist Mukta Sachdev, an expert at the Clinique Shades for India Treatment Workshop shares tips on treatment or corrective makeup. Technological advancements today have made it possible to incorporate skincare and treatment benefits into makeup products, such as foundation formulae, that not only conceal and cover flaws but treat skin concerns over time.

MAKE UP YOUR MIND

The starting point however, of any beauty regime is getting the basics of skincare right. A personalised routine for your skin type, consisting of a good quality cleanser, gentle exfoliation, a moisturiser with sun protection and plenty of water is a habit every woman should maintain. Following this, daily usage of makeup should be based on individual comfort levels and being consistent with your skin concern, just as with your skincare. Foundations, powders and eyeliners from a trusted brand are safe. With a few simple techniques, natural features can be enhanced in a subtle way without looking overdone.

THE BASE EFFECT

Getting the right makeup base begins with foundation, which have come to offer more than just coverage. They now include hydration, medicated ingredients to treat concerns like discolouration, blemishes, acne, pigmentation and dark spots in light weight, oil-free and non-irritating formulae. If you have very dry skin, you might want to consider a cream or liquid foundation. Tinted moisturisers are great for evening out complexion, if you’re not looking for full coverage.

POLISHED YET PRETTY

Make your foundation shade selection with care by taking a close look at the shade on your own in various lighting situations, as well as in sync to the rest of your body, especially the shoulders, neck and chest. Start with a drop and gradually build up the coverage to your desired look. To achieve that natural look, gently apply foundation with a wet sponge. Be sure to blend the product into your skin to the point where it becomes your second skin, rather than sits on top. For quick touch-ups, a little pressed or loose powder in a roll-up brush applicator can be handy. Keep your look simple and chic this party season.

If you have dry skin, especially during this season, you can use a liquid foundation
