TRAVELLING THE WORLD CAN BE A LESSON IN DESIGN SENSIBILITIES
Travel, they say, broadens one’s horizons and is a treasure trove of knowledge. This inevitably is the inspiration for “design” to me. An interesting quote I came across was: “Design is the applicant of intent — the opposite of happenstance and an antidote to accident” by Robert L. Peters. And in some ways, my own luxury furniture gallery NouVeau came about as a tribute to the store opened by Siegfried Bing in Paris in 1895, a destination for luxury brands.
However, on my recent visit to Singapore I was awed by this artist Nathan Sawaya whose art sculptures in Lego Bricks were mesmerising (on display at the art and science museum in Singapore).
Hola! Spain is yet another splendid country similar to India, rich in culture. The famous architect Antoni Gaudi belonged to the modernism movement and was famous for his unique style and individualistic design. One of his renowned works, the La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, is a World Heritage site that commenced in 1882 and is still a work in progress.
When in Rome do as Romans do in the Eternal City! The Trevi fountain or the wishing fountain is certainly an inspiration — a water body incorporated in design. The Vatican City — a place so small and yet a country on its own founded by Pope Julius II. The Vatican Museums in Viale Vaticano’s collection left me spellbound. Intricately collaged mosaics created gorgeous figurative art. Bernim’s Baroque was my highlight. That is resplendent Rome. ‘Be Inspired Stay Inspired’ is my mantra in life.
