Burglars and chain-snatchers continue to be a nuisance for the Cyberabad police. Last year as the area recorded around nine thefts, house burglaries and chain snatching cases every day. As many as 3,478 cases were registered last year.

Things are no different in the first three weeks of the New Year. Burglars and thieves continue to strike with impunity at Jeedimetla, Rajedranagar, Vanstalipuram, LB Nagar and other places.

As per the data with the Cyberabad police, the area saw 1,657 thefts, 987 burglaries, and 779 cases of chainsnatching.

Though the police claim that there is a decrease in such crimes, after a few notorious gangs were rounded up Saturday’s incident at Jeedimetla, showed that burglars are still on the prowl.

The Cyberabad police say it finds it difficult to tackle the criminals because of its vast jurisdiction. However, the police has now deployed special teams and has also set up four more Central Crime Stations.

Central Crime Stations at Balanagar, Rajendranagar, Saroornagar and Malkajgiri to specially focus on property offence cases. We are trying our best to bring down the number of cases,” Cyberabad ACP M. Venkateshwaralu said.

According to Cyberabad police officials, the vast area and insequate police are the main hurdles in tackling the increasing crime. “We have to take care of a population of 70 lakh in an area spread over 3,600 square kilometres with a limited number of cops,” a senior police officer said.

“However, we have rounded up many notorious burglary gangs in the recent times,” he said.

He added that the police had solved nearly 70 per cent of the reported cases in 2012.
