What steps must be taken for effective disposal of waste?

- SANDHYA

People should maintain different dustbins for different kinds of waste. They should dump waste in the respective coloured bins. Green bin for dry waste, yellow for soiled and wet waste, red for organic, white for medical waste and blue for plastic. Waste disposal operators should be appointed to collect waste. Instead of dumping wastes into water bodies an effective method of disposal should be adopted. Composting is used to process wet waste. We must construct landfills in suburbs to allow wet and organic wastes to break down biologically into nutrient rich compost. These landfills handle wastes in an efficient way and helps the contamination of lands. Landfill must be done only up to a certain extent and must be filled with utmost care to prevent excessive emission of methane. Recycling is one of the best ways to dispose dry waste. It helps reduce pollution, save nature and conserve energy. We can produce useful materials like paper, glass etc. by recycling dry waste.

R.R. ARVIND NAWIN (Congratulations R.R. Arvind Nawin! You win 150 which you may collect from our office before Friday) Garbage from markets should be disposed at dumping yards twice daily. Municipalities should arrange people to collect waste from houses every day and segregate recyclable waste from garbage. Biogas and bio-manure units must be set up at dumping yards. Proper guidelines should be given to waste disposing staff for moving waste to dumping yards in closed bins. All industries, offices, hotels and educational institutions should segregate waste into ‘recyclable’ and ‘non-recyclable’ categories. Bio-hazardous waste from hospitals, research centres, institutions and industries should be handled separately and disposed promptly by incineration. E-waste (computer waste, electrical waste) should be handled separately and must be assigned to authorised agencies only. Dr S. PRASANNA

KUMAR What concerns most of us is domestic waste. The safe way of disposing it involves collection and transporting waste collected in plastic bags. The collected waste should either be composted, used in landfills or incinerated to produce energy.

MUDAY VIJAY Garbage collectors at our doorsteps need ID cards neat bio- fresh uniforms and gloves.
