Mudassir harassed Wasim, says police

- DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, MARCH 5

The city police on Tuesday clarified that contrary to reports and rumours, the Kashmiri student Mudassir Kamran, who ended his life on Eflu campus, was not detained by the local police. They said he had merely been called for counseling. “When Wasim approached the OU police alleging that he was assaulted by Mudassir, we took him to the police station and counselled him at the reception. He was released in 20 minutes, after Eflu students and professors approached us,” said East Zone DCP R. Jayalakshmi.

On Tuesday, cops took a few protesting students to the Commissioner’s Office where matters were explained to them. The cops recorded the video statement of a student, who clarified that Mudassir was kept at the police station for only 20 minutes for counselling.

Meanwhile, the accused proctor Harish Vijra is yet to be arrested by the police, even two days after booking a case against him for abetment of suicide.

The police claimed that Mudassir had harassed Wasim physically, and the university authorities had got complaints about this. “Wasim told us that Mudassir had made physical advances like touching his body, kissing and hugging. Mudassir had also told him he was in love with him. When Wasim moved to another room, Mudassir started harassing him. He said Mudassir tried to strangle him,” the DCP said.

Meanwhile, Eflu students said the cops are trying to twist the case. “They were roommates and close friends for over four years, even before coming to Eflu. How could Mudassir suddenly strangle Wasim? They had a petty quarrel and Mr Vijra blew it out of proportion,” a student alleged.
