FEB. 15, 2012: Italian Marines on board oil tanker Enrica Lexie shoot down two Indian fishermen Jelestine, 45, and Ajish Pinky,25, who were in the trawler St Antony off Kerala coast. FEB. 19: Massimilia­no Lattorre and Salvatore Girone, the two marines, charged by Kerala police with homicide. APRIL 24: Italian government signs out of court settlement with families of the two victims and pays them 1 crore each. MAY 18: Police files 196-page chargeshee­t against the marines. JUNE 2: Marines released after 105 day in judicial custody. DEC. 20: Kerala High Court temporaril­y relaxes bail conditions for both Italian marines by allowing them to travel to Italy for two weeks during Christmas. JANUARY 4, 2013: The marines back in Kerala keeping their word. JANUARY 18: Supreme Court dismisses the Italian government's plea that India has no jurisdicti­on over the case. However, it rules that Kerala didn't have the authority to adjudicate the case since the jurisdicti­on of the state extends to only 12 nautical miles where as the incident occurred at 20.5 nautical miles. FEB. 22: SC grants plea of Girone and Lattore to visit Italy this time for four weeks to vote in the general elections. MARCH 11: Italian foreign ministry states that the two marines will not return to India to face their charges as they can be tried only under Internatio­nal Maritime law. MARCH 12: PM Manmohan Singh tells Italy that its decision not to send back marines is not acceptable to India. MARCH 14: Supreme Court restrains Italy's ambassador Daniel Mancini from leaving India. Mancini will be tried for contempt of court by the SC if the marines fail to return by March 21.
