Docs get a healthy dose of time

Techies are not the only ones who get company help to de-stress and stay fit. Hospitals are now working out ways so that their doctors can maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Senior doctors are ensuring that their juniors adher to work timings and do not schedule surgeries at night. And some hospitals are installing gym facilities to ensure their doctors are fit.

Dr G.S. Rao, managing director of Yashoda Hospitals, recently narrated an incident wherein a consultant’s wife was vexed as her husband was hardly home. Dr Rao’s attempts to pacify her was of no use; she was convinced that it was the policy of work which kept her husband away from home.

He urged doctors to not resort to unhealthy practices and maintain a proper work-life balance; family was extremely important and must not be neglected.

Similarly doctors with pot-bellies can arouse a lot of confusion among patients.

why not others and that’s the motivation.”

To ensure that they don’t skip their fitness routine, a gym has been installed in the hospital.

Care Hospitals asks its doctors to take up hobbies as it’s a good stress buster. “To pursue a hobby we adjust the work timings according to the doctor’s convenienc­e. The initiative is to give doctors the time to rewind,” explained Dr Ram Krishna.

Dr Srivenu of Indo-American Cancer Institute explained that institutio­nal initiative will go a long way to create a better environmen­t.

Dr K. Prashant, psychologi­st, explained that apart from profession­al compulsion­s, the doctors’ unwillingn­ess to opt for other activities was a major hurdle. Social life becomes restricted as friends are few or far away. After a point, we find a comfort zone in the hospital which we don’t want to give up, said doctors who however wanted a better work life balance.
