What measures must be taken for effective disposal of waste in city?

-

People must avoid throwing garbage in the open. No one would like to see their front yard strewn with garbage, that too garbage that does not belong to you. This is not at all hygienic and also very bad etiquette. The cheapest way and hasslefree way to dispose waste in our cities is for residents to dig two pits in some corner or dead-end of their colony, and dump the dry mass into one pit and wet mass into the other. Care should be taken to ensure that plastic of any type ex. milk packets, plastic packets, toys, glass bottles or wooden items are not put into these pits. These items could be sold or recycled. After these pits are full, they must be covered with sand. A month later, both the pits should be opened and mixed manure could be made use of to nurture trees in the colony or trees growing in the gardens of residents and even to strengthen the roots of trees in parks. This procedure could be continued with regularly thus avoiding the wage of the garbage collector. Mrs JEAN THOMSON,

Mount Carmel High School, New Bowenpally, Secunderabad. 9848514637 (Congratulations Jean Thomson! You win 150 which ` you may collect from our office before Friday) The GHMC commissioner should issue strict instructions to authorities concerned to fix meetings with executive working staff, drivers of waste collector vans, garbage lifting workers and sweepers. Such reviews should be conducted twice a week with regard to lifting, cleaning and making city garbage-free. The GHMC should adopt waste management system in every locality which has yielded positive results in China and Singapore.

SANGEETA VIKRAM RAJ Day-to-day generation of waste is increasing due to rising population. Disposal should prompt to maintain cleanliness. GHMC should direct all colonies to take effective steps in clearing waste from each house on nominal charges to be borne by residents through private contractors. Contractor should dump waste in earmarked place and GHMC should lift waste from colonies and dispose it off on a daily basis. GHMC should procure special colour-coded trucks and with only tilting mechanism for dumping purpose.

KUSUM LATA MATHUR People must be educated to dispose waste properlt by categorising waste into solid, liquid and shrapnel into separate colour-coded dustbins. They can be educated through roadside posters. The government can supply dustbins on subsidised rates for those who cannot afford three dustbins. Waste collection, segregation and disposal of garbage should be done by municipal workers. The waste has to be collected by the GHMC using appropriate means and it should be dispatched to separate garbage handling for dumping, recycling etc on a daily and area-wise basis.

DR AVINASH KUSUMA Organic matter should be kept aside for composting as it decomposes easily in air. This attracts insects and causes diseases. The composted matter can also be used as fertiliser. KONDOJU GOPINATH

ACHARI GHMC should start a monitoring cell to supervise planning, implementation and control of waste disposal measures. This cell should ensure that staff are effectively collecting, transporting and disposing waste as scheduled.
