Summer load fails power

Officials say rising temperature causing disruptions

- AMRITA DIDYALA | DC HYDERABAD, MAY 4

With soaring temperatures, erratic power supply has returned to annoy citizens. Over and above the hour of scheduled cuts, citizens are facing numerous power disruptions throughout the day.

While the emergency cell is ringing with complaints throughout the day, officials blame it on soaring temperatures, causing maintenance issues.

“We are facing numerous disruptions in power supply throughout the day since the last few days. Whenever we call the area office, we are told that the power will be restored in 10 to 15 minutes, but the power supply is disrupted again after an hour or so,” complained Anjalee N., a resident of East Marredpally.

Among other affected areas are Vijayanagar Colony, AC Guards, Sainikpuri, Tarnaka, Somajiguda and Mehdipatnam.

Meanwhile, the power demand in the state is already touching 295 MU per day and is expected to cross 300 to 310 MU per day over the next fortnight. The demand is already nearing the 300 MU per day mark, which was the highest demand till last year, but this year we are expecting the demand to go much over 300 MU during the peak season, mainly because of a drastic increase in consumption by the domestic sector,” said a senior official from APTransco.

Officials meanwhile are also taking precautionary measures for maintenance, as the sudden load of a number of air-conditioners running at the same time in a single area can lead to snapping of feeders or disruption of lines.

“We have imposed scheduled cuts in the city due to the increase in demand, but the disruptions are primarily because of snapping of lines due to sudden heavy loads. We are receiving complaints and acting on them as soon as possible. However, despite round-the-year maintenance, heavy loads are causing disruptions, said a divisional engineer, on condition of anonymity.
