Patients signed consent forms, knew their odds

- DC CORRESPONDENT, HYDERABAD, MAY 4

Maternal Health and Research Trust has strongly objected to the wrong propaganda by four of its patients who underwent in vitro fertilisation on April 8, 2013 but failed to get pregnant. Angered by the negative result, the patients registered a complaint against medical director Dr Roya Rozati at the Banjara Hills police station, further aggravating the situation.

The allegations have upset the doctor who is in possession of the consent form signed by the patients before undertaking the treatment. The patients were counselled before the treatment and were categorically explained that the chances of success would be only 30 per cent due to the age factor. The women are above 38 years of age.

“They were briefed and explained that the success ratio can’t be guaranteed. They had undergone IVF treatments at other centres too where they failed. It is evident that the two couples were very frustrated and were desperate to have a child,” explained Dr Rozati.

“The number of eggs reduces due to the age fac- tor hence the chances of natural conception are less,” she added.

Dr Rozati has seen more than 5,000 patients in her 17 years of professional life and believes that not only are these two couples frustrated but also very hopeful that technology would give them the much desired result, which unfortunately didn’t happen. In a fit of anger they have filed a complaint at the police station and are threatening the doctors and staff of the hospital.

State Human Rights Commission has asked the district medical and health officer to submit a report by July 5 against the petition filed by aggrieved patients.

The state health officials have been asked to carry out an inquiry and report its findings.
