- DC CORRESPONDENTS NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD/CHANDIGARH, MAY 4

with agency inputs Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Haq, who was injured in a scuffle with another inmate in a Jammu jail, was critical and in deep coma at PGIMER hospital in Chandigarh. A team of Pakistan High Commission officials visited him at the hospital and were in touch with the doctors for regular update on the prisoner’s condition.

However, both Indian and Pakistani officials differed on the health status of the prisoner. While India maintained that the condition is serious but stable, Pakistan took a grim view stating that the medical prognosis is “pessimistic.”

At Kot Balwal central jail, in Jammu, prisoners from India and Pakistan were segregated on Saturday in a bid to prevent recurrence of the attack on a Pakistani inmate. Authorities also increased the number of security personnel at the jail.

Meanwhile, both New Delhi and Islamabad continued trading charges over the issue. Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “Here we acted very fast, took action against those involved in the attack on the Pakistani prisoner, but Pakistan took no action in the case of Sarabjit’s killing.” Pakistan foreign office spokesman Aziz Ahmad Chaudhry said, “Although we did everything to save Sarabjit’s life yet it was inappropriate for India to declare him a hero. He was a terrorist.”

He also said that Pakistan was considering to send the family of Sanaullah to India.
