Vasan act may hurt Congress

- DC CORRESPONDENT

Developmemnts in the Tamil Nadu Congress have come as a “bad omen” for the party ahead of the Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls.

The party was pushed to a third position in Maharashtra and Haryana after the Assembly elections last month.

Mr Vasan took the decision to quit Congress and float a new party after seeing top leaders of the AIADMK and the DMK facing cases in the courts and other Dravaidan parties are not in a position to come to power on their own. The state will be going to the polls in 2016

The desertions in the Tamil Nadu will certainly have a bearing on the Jharkhand and Jmmu and Kashmir polls. While the former deputy chief minister of J& K Mangat Ram Sharma quit the Congress and joined the PDP, the Congress broke off its alliance with the JMM in Jharkhand. The Congress has been a junior player in both the states.

“We have lost Maharashtra and Haryana polls and will be losing Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir elections. Besides, we have no chance in Bihar going to the polls next year,” a senior party leader predicted.

The BJP stands to gain in these three states. This is the assessment of the BJP’s detractors.

Meanwhile, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday held confabulations with some senior party leaders, including Kerala chief minister Oomen Chandy, on the future course in the wake of a string of electoral debacles since the Lok Sabha polls in May.

Mr Gandhi, who is in the midst of an exercise to discuss ways to revive the party, held lengthy discussions with the leaders.
