What measures must be taken to curb wastage of water?

-

Minimising the wastage of water and cutting down on excessive consumption is the first step towards water conservation. One of the most important steps in preventing wastage of water is stopping leaks. The authorities should constantly check water supply pipes, taps and tankers for leakages. We can also prevent water wastage at homes and offices by using quality plumbing materials and through regular maintenance. The public should be educated and given tips on water conservation. By conserving water we are not only avoiding hefty bills but also saving up water which can be used by others who need it.

I t is unfortunate that we have not learnt lessons in water conservation well enough. Not very long ago, our forefathers used to dig deep wells and tanks to store water. This also helped in recharging groundwater. However, now we are dependent on borewells which squeeze out groundwater.

The government as well as citizens should take the initiative to construct tanks and wells in villages and urban areas. This would help in recharging groundwater and in harnessing rainwater. The government should also ensure use of quality materials to supply water to households and should take steps to curb the wastage of water.

A ll domestic conventional taps should be replaced with auto “on” and “off ” taps to prevent leakages. Used water should be diverted to develop greenery at all possible places. Water supply tankers should be leak proof. High quality supply lines should be laid to prevent frequent bursting. Recycling to purify water for reuse should be encouraged in a big way. Wide publicity should be taken up through mobile vans to educate people to conserve water.

E very locality should have a sewage treatment plant. The purified sewage water can be used for plantations, roads, toilet cleaning, garden, parks, cleaning etc. Now for plantations and gardening in most areas municipal or groundwater is being used. As the population of Hyderabad is increasing preventing the wastage of water should be given priority.

T he authorities must enforce a strict schedule for supplying water to households and in turn this could help in the reduction of pressure in pipes and leakage can be stopped to an extent. A helpline must be started for tackling leaks and all calls must be immediately attended to by officials.

All mobile tankers must be checked daily to stop wastage through leaks. The public has to be counselled through effective publicity measures.
