HYDERABAD POTTEY AT YOUTUBE
Director of education at Glendale Academy International
AThe ongoing YouTube Fan Fest in Mumbai has a bit of true blue Hyderabadi flavour with the brothers behind Hyderabad Diaries, Abrar and Shah Rukh Khan, being invited to be part of the YouTube Pulse.
Shah Rukh, the younger of the two is in Mumbai, trying to make the most of the fest that sees participation from all the YouTube stars including Superwoman, Kanan Gill, Arunabh Kumar (The Viral njum Babukhan says that the company might be run by her family, but it was only based on her educational qualifications that she was given the job. “My father-in-law Bashiruddin Babukhan was a broad-minded person and he insisted that I join the company and my husband has always been rooting for me. So that way, it was a blessing, especially because not many women from my community are given the chance to explore work opportunities.”
She also brings up another point. Sometimes, it’s not just about the capability of a woman. Many times it is the Fever) and Harinathan Rascalas).
Abrar (27), who was unable to make it as he is based out of Qatar, says, “This is an amazing opportunity to get more exposure and also to network.”
Hyderabad Diaries, with over 3 lakh subscribers on Facebook and with a whooping 2.6 million views on YouTube, specialises in Dakhni comedy. “So it is literally a piece of Hyderabad at the fest,” says Abrar.
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh is excited about rubbing shoulders with the celebrities of the Internet. He says, “Unfortunately, our talk could not be executed at Pulse. But having been here and meeting all these people have given me new ideas on content creation.”
While their video skits touch upon the common subjects of exams, Indian parents and relationships, the channel’s USP is the Dakhni language and its way of portrayal. Abrar, who has also directed Dakhni films like Gullu Dada Three, adds, “YouTube is where the action is now. People tune in to YouTube more than they watch films. So we take our own unique identity from the city and put a piece of it on the Internet.” With the two living in different time zones, they work largely online. Abrar sends his bits of the vlog to Shah Rukh, who adds and edits his inputs and uploads it. And the rest follows with their growing viewership despite the language largely being Hyderabadi.
The duo plans to do something different in the coming months. Abrar shares, “I will be coming down to Hyderabad in June and I plan to do a detective series. Something like Sherlock Holmes, but with a Hyderabad twist to it.” family who don’t want to send the woman to work. “I’ve heard of instances where some people believed that since they came from a well-to-do family, there was no need for the daughter-inlaw to work. So in such cases, the woman is not even given a chance,” she says.
Anjum agrees with SEBI’s stance. “Women and men both think differently. Our cognitive abilities are very different and so we process issues differently. When men handle problems, they are able to isolate the issue, but women are able to look at it as a whole, they are able to find various connecting issues with it. Women will bring the much-needed balance to the team.”
