‘I DISCUSS WORK A LOT WITH RAM’
‘MOM IS MY BEST FRIEND’
Gautami Kapoor, who has returned to the small screen with Tere Sheher Mein, has been getting rave reviews for her performance on the show. The actress, who essays the role of a mother of three young daughters, admits that she is protective of the girls in real life too.
She says, “Being a mother in real life, I feel protective towards the girls. When we travel together I’m very cautious and feel responsible for them. We had a photo shoot on the first day and that was a good icebreaker. Otherwise it’s not uncommon to have arguments when there are so many women on the sets. What I like is that they don’t disregard my suggestions, although they do have the right to, as professionals.”
Ask her about how her children react to her onscreen persona, and Gautami says, “They know it’s acting, so they don’t get jealous of my screen kids. But Ram (Kapoor) and I have consciously kept the kids away from our work. We don’t want them to grow up with wrong notions about the industry. Today’s kids grow up very fast and we don’t want them to get swayed before time. They did watch one or two episodes of my show though. My daughter had a volatile reaction. She told me, ‘You are the same, at home you shout at us, there you are shouting at them’. So she relates to my screen kids.”
No matter how busy she gets, Gautami makes it a point to spend enough time with her family. “We have a bank of episodes so we are not feeling the pressure and I hope we never do. I shoot for two to three days, and then take an off so I can drop my kids to school, spend time with them. The team adjusts to my schedule.”
Now, her husband Ram Kapoor, too, has got busy with his new show Dil Ki Baatein. “I discuss my work a lot with Ram, his perspective is different. When I took up TSM he told me to enjoy work, be happy, make sure it’s not bogging me down. I watched two episodes of
his show.
DIt’s a different image for Ram. It’s the first time he’s playing a middle class person. Otherwise he was always this rich industrialist in business suits. All his roles have been serious, with hardly any tinge of humour but this one is different. Of course since he’s my husband, I am biased towards his show. I love it.”
Fans who have been waiting to watch them together on screen will have to wait longer. “I know it’s been really long since we worked together. We are part of two soaps on two different channels and we both believe in doing just one project at a time. So I don’t think we will be working together anytime
soon.”
