The victims were identified as Salman Baig, 22, his wife Munna alias Naziya, his brother Rahman Baig, 16, his sister Ruqiya, 19, his brother-inlaw Md. Basith, 38, and his cousins Masarath Fathima and Muskan, both 17.

Six people belonging to the family survived as they did not get into the water.

The incident occurred at Gouramma Lake in Charikonda village. Locals said the seven had entered the lake and Muskan moved into deeper water and started drowning.

“As Muskan started shouting for help, Rahman and Salman tried to save her. However, they too started drowning. Then Basith went to rescue them. However, he too started to drown. The other two women tried to help them but they too were dragged in,” said Amangal CI P. Sai Kumar.

The rest of the family, four women, started shouting for help and attracted the attention of villagers. However, the seven had drowned before local swimmers could do anything. “In an hour we retrieved the bodies. By then they were dead,” said the CI.

Police officials and locals said the lake’s bottom is marshy and some areas are very deep. Locals said that there were deep trenches in some areas and that the victims did not know them.

Officials said that only locals entered the lake for fishing. “There were no recent drowning incidents here,” said Mr Sai Kumar.
