Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday said the government would replicate multi-storied two-bedroom flats being constructed in the IDH Colony for the poor in various other localities in Hyderabad, including in Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills areas.

The CM, who paid a surprise visit to the IDH Colony in New Bhoiguda, to check on the progress in construction of two-storied buildings for 396 odd families after razing dilapidated buildings, said that new high-rise buildings for the poor with lifts and other basic amenities would be con- structed in different parts of Hyderabad in a phased manner.

Each two-bedroom-hall-kitchen flat in IDH Colony is of 580 sft area. In all, 396 flats are being constructed in 32 blocks of ground-plus-two storey buildings at a cost of `37 crore. Each flat costs about `7.9 lakh. Excise minister T. Padma Rao, commercial taxes minister T. Srinivas Yadav, GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar and others accompanied the Chief Minister.

The buildings in IDH Colony will be ready by June 2, the Telangana Formation Day. Express- ing satisfaction with the construction, quality and size of the flats in IDH Colony, the Chief Minister said his desire was to see the poor live with dignity.

“I want the poor to live with dignity like others. That is why I decided to initiate the two-bedroom housing scheme for the poor in the state. We will see that such buildings also come up in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills. Why should the poor not live in Banjara Hills, which originally belonged to them?” the CM asked.

Mr Rao also asked director-general of police Anurag Sharma to consider the construction of similar flats for the police personnel.
