Talking Book Project inaugurated
BOMBAY, April 30 A talking book project, the first of its kind in Asia, which opens up new hopes and possibilities for the education of the blind, through the spoken word was inaugurated by the U.S. Consul General here, Mr. Milton C. Rewinkel, at a workshop for the blind in Worli, a suburb.
The talking book comprises recorded tapes enclosed in compact cassettes. Each cassette contains tapes of reading material for 21 hours equivalent to roughly 300 pages of textbook for the blind.
They also offer recreational material for the blind, who have so far been educated through the Braille system. The Vocational Rehabilitation Administration of the USA (VRA) has gifted equipment worth Rs. 1 lakhs to the National Association for the Blind (NAB) for developing the talking book programme in India. — UNI
