Cop found dead with bullet injury Officials probe misfire, suicide angles

- DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, NOV. 9

A head constable was found dead under suspicious circumstances after a bullet hit his head from his own rifle at Cyberabad armed reserve police headquarters in Amberpet on Monday morning.

Sheik Mohiuddin was found lying in a pool of blood on his bed with the self-loading rifle in his hand, by his subordinates early on Monday. Police is yet to establish whether it was an accidental fire or suicide.

Moinuddin was complaining about ill health for many months and he had called his relatives on Sunday to speak about his grievous back-pain. It is likely he wanted to end his life due to the extreme pain, East Zone police said.

The incident occurred inside the guard room near the main gate of the armed reserve headquarters. Three other cops were sleeping in the same room after 2 am. One armed guard was outside on duty. “All of them including Moinuddin were on bed and the lights were off. Three of his subordinates woke up by hearing a gunshot and ran outside,. As they couldn’t find anything, they returned to the room and saw Moinuddin with a bullet injury on his head,” said a police official from East Zone.

Usually, cops keep their arms with them while they are in bed. “The rifle barrel of Moinuddin was found pressed on his chin. The bullet entered from the chin and came out of his head,” said an official.

“As per the norms, the arms' barrel should be on their bed in the direction of the leg. In order to open fire from the weapon, it has to be loaded and the safety catch has to be moved with force,” said A Ravinder, DCP of East Zone.
