Sewage line suffers leak at Begumpet
Babus put the blame on plastic and sanitary waste THE WATER
A major sewer pipeline was damaged at B.S. Maktha, Begumpet on Tuesday afternoon. Drain water entered the locality and residents could not move out for hours due the unbearable stink in the area.
This is the second such incident in two weeks and sources say that the reason was people dumping plastic and sanitary waste in drain lines.
The week before last, it took the HMWS&SB one full day to remove sewerage waste that had entered the cellar of a jewellery shop.
Also, because of new roads, three manholes had been covered at Somajiguda and officials took hours to dig up the road to identify the manholes.
Nutritionist Mary Shobha, a resident of B.S. Maktha said, “At around 1.30 on Tuesday sewerage water spread into the locality. I could not drive through the area, human waste was scattered everywhere and the smell was unbearable. No one could walk through and people remained behind doors. Sewerage offi-
Board hasd asked the public not to dump plastic bags and other fibrous items in sewer lines as that can clog the lines and cause leaks on to roads and backflows into premises cials, with the help of a sewer tank, cleared the drain line. However, it took over three hours.”
Another resident Anjani Mani added, “Residents should be educated not to throw solid waste into the drains. Earlier too the line had choked and hundreds of sanitary napkins were removed. It is the fault of the residents.”
The HMWS&SB’s Begumpet division head said, “Due to the choking of the trunk sewer near B.S. Maktha, the sewerage water entered the locality. Lumps of plastic bags and other fibrous material were found in the sewerage line along with silt and that caused stagnation in the pipeline. After cleaning the obstructions, sewerage passed freely and the overflow in the locality stopped.”
City sewerage Board authorities have appealed to citizens not to dump waste materials like plastic bags and fibrous items in sewer lines as that can cause clogging and overflows on roads and backflows into premises.
The Water Board authorities have also asked other service departments including the Hyderabad Metropolitan Rail Ltd, GHMC, R&B /National Highways to instruct /provide conditions in their work contracts not to cover manholes while re-carpeting roads.
