Protesting the stray dog menace in a barbarian manner, youth activists of a Kerala-based party, Youth Front (M), allegedly killed around 10 canines, tied a few to a pole and took them out through the town.
The stray dogs, which were wandering around the town were caught and killed by the activists. The municipal authorities later took away the dogs and buried them.
Youth Front (M) president Saji Manjakadambil said they had killed the strays as the dogs had become a menace. They said their act was a retaliation towards Union minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi’s stand to protect the street dogs in the state.
Police said they have registered a case against 15 activists of Youth Front (M), an offshoot of Kerala Congress (M) led by former state minister K.M. Mani, under section 429 (committing mischief by killing the animals) of the Indian Penal Code.
Accusing Maneka Gandhi of adopting a negative approach towards the stray dog menace, the activists also sent letters to Ms Gandhi asking her to change her stand on the issue.
Veterinary chief surgeon Mohana Chandran Nair performed postmortem of the dead dogs and their internal organs have been sent for forensic examination, police said.
Animal rights activists condemned the incident, calling it as a “disgusting” act.
