Remove Mr, Shri for PM: PMO

- NITIN MAHAJAN | DC NEW DELHI, SEPT. 27

New Delhi: No more of prefixes like ‘Mr’, ‘Shri’, ‘Mananiya’, ‘Honourable’ or ‘Shriman’ are to be used before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name in government advertisements. The Prime Minister’s Office had asked all ministries to do away with such honorific titles or appendices to the PM’s name.

No more ‘Mr’, ‘Shri’, ‘Mananiya’, ‘Honourable’ or ‘Shriman’ to be used before Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi’s name in government advertisements.

The Prime Minister’s Office had asked all ministries to do away with such honorific titles or appendices to the PM’s name. The standard format to address the Prime Minister would be only ‘PM Narendra Modi’ from now onwards. Sources stated that all departments have also been asked to appoint a nodal officer each to get their respective advertisements cleared by the PMO.

Union Information and Broadcasting ministry sources stated that the PMO had repeatedly expressed displeasure that its directives regarding government advertisements are not being followed. While some ministries are still using ‘Mr’ or ‘Honourable’ in front of the Prime Minister’s name and despite repeated attempts there is no uniformity in these government advertisements regarding the issue.

It is understood that some ministries release their advertisements with ‘Mr’, ‘Shri’, ‘Mananiya’, ‘Honourable’ or ‘Shriman’ titles ahead of their respective minister’s names too. Sources stated that this forces the ministries to put a honorific title in front of Mr Modi’s name.

Sources said recently an advertisement was almost issued by the Human Resource Development Ministry that had such titles ahead of the names of three ministers, but not in front of the Prime Minister’s name.
