Burnley down Watford at home

-

Burnley, Sept. 27: Record-signing Jeff Hendrick scored his first goal for Burnley as they beat Watford 2-0 in the Premier League at Turf Moor on Monday.

Irish midfielder Hendrick signed from second-tier Derby County last month for a reported £10 million ($13.1 million, 11.8 million euros) on a threeyear contract.

And the 24-year-old opened the scoring in the 38th minute when he headed home Steven Defour’s corner and the Belgian set up a second goal when Michael Keane nodded in five minutes after the break.

This was promoted Burnley’s second win of the season after their shock victory over Liverpool.

Burnley looked the likeliest to break the deadlock, with Deeney receiving little service up front.

The game looked as if it would still be deadlocked at 0-0 come half-time, when Dean Marney got on the end of a Johann Berg Gudmundsson shot to force a corner.

Defour’s cross then found Hendrick, who forced a header in over

the line as Watford protested the corner had drifted out of play on its way into the box.

Burnley’s second goal came early in the second half, when a Defour corner came back to him and his cross saw Keane rise above the Watford defence.

KLOPP DEMANDS REDS‘ IMPROVEMENT Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has said there is still room for improvement if his team are to mount a serious Premier League title challenge this season despite their impressive start to the campaign.

The Merseyside club, who last won the league in 1990, demolished Hull City 5-1 on Saturday to move to fourth in the standings, five points behind leaders Manchester City.

Liverpool have won at Arsenal and Chelsea, and thumped champions Leicester City 4-1 this season, with their only defeat coming against promoted Burnley.

“I don’t like standing here with all these numbers and saying ‘brilliant, brilliant’. It is as good as it should be. We are a good football side, but we have to improve — not only in (defending) set pieces, but in a lot of things. We have done well, but Swansea is the next challenge and it’s a big challenge.

“Everybody feels good and that’s good, but nothing has happened really. It is a nice and simple game on good days, but on other days you can’t find a solution and that makes it interesting.”
