Techie killed, friend ends life

- DC CORRESPONDENT

A youth committed suicide by jumping in front of a train, just minutes after his close friend was killed in a bike accident at Moosapet late on Tuesday.

Techie G. Harikrisha, 28, and his friend K. Ramesh, both natives of Guntur, were on their way to their hostel on a bike when a truck rammed them and ran over Harikrishna.

While Ramesh, who was riding the bike, escaped with minor injuries due to a helmet, Harikrishna sustained grievous wounds and was killed on the spot.

It’s believed that Ramesh, after discovering that his friend was dead, disappeared from the accident scene. Later, his body was found on the railway track.

According to Kukatpally officials, the duo was coming from Kothapet when the mishap occurred around 11.30 pm near Moosapet Crossroads.

“This is a case of hit and run. The truck rammed their bike and left without stopping. Harikrishna sustained a serious head injury while Ramesh escaped because he was wearing a helmet,” said Kukatpally SI G. Gopinath.

Police procured CCTV footage of the accident to track down the suspect vehicle.

Soon after the accident, passersby called the police. The CCTV footage showed that Ramesh was present on the scene when some passersby arrived. But when it was confirmed that Harikrishna was dead, Ramesh simply walked away. “He then went to Bharathnagar railway tracks and jumped in front of a passing train,” a police official said.

According to the victims’ friends, Harikrishna was working as a software engineer at a private firm, while Ramesh was an employee at a private hospital. “Both had grown up together at Vepakampally in Guntur and knew each other since they were kids. After the mishap, Ramesh must have gone into shock. He must have thought suicide was the only way out before him,” a friend said.

Both bodies were handed over to families.
