Sarvani finishes in top five

Rishiraj ends 10th at national U-7 chess tourney after losing tie-breaker

Sarvani Cheedella surprised overnight leader Sneha Halder of West Bengal in the last round to snatch the fourth spot behind Suhaani.

Telangana and Andhra players finished in the top bracket at the National Under 7 chess championsh­ip that concluded at Pondicherr­y. Andhra Pradesh girl Sarvani Cheedella ended fourth while Sai Rishiraj tied for the sixth place with 8 points but was 10th after the tie-breaker.

Sarvani upset overnight leader Sneha Halder of West Bengal in the last round to take her points tally to 8.5 which secured her the fourth position.

Priyansh Das of Odisha won the boys category by defeating overnight leader Ilamparthy of Tamil Nadu in the last round. Both the players scored 9.5 points out of 11 rounds. In the tie-break Priyansh won the event pushing Ilamparthy into the second place with Daaevik Wadhawan of Delhi taking the third spot with 9 points.

The other Telangana boys were a bit too far off the mark. Ganesh Sai Siddarth took the 22nd place with 7.5 points while Adireddy Arjun occupied the 30th spot with 7 points.

The girls event was won by Karnataka’s A. N. Shefali who defeated Ishani Mondal of West Bengal to aggregate 10 points out of 11 rounds as another overnight leader Sneha Halder of West Bengal lost to AP’s Sarvani.

Sneha settled for the runner-up position with 9 points. Suhaani Lohia of Maharashtr­a was third.
