Imran has the Chinese worried over CPEC

-

Islamabad, Oct.19: Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf’s decision to ‘shut’ down Islamabad on November 2 seems to have sent the Chinese in a tizzy.

Mr Khan met the Chinese ambassador Sun Weidong at the former’s Bani Gala residence on Tuesday. Mr Khan assured the Chinese ambassador that the party’s ongoing stir against the prime minister was not meant to sabotage the ChinaPakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC),

Pakistan Today reported. Mr Weidong had requested the meeting with the PTI chief. The party’s vice-chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, chief whip in the National Assembly Dr Shireen Mazari and chief spokesperson Naeemul Haq were also present.

The PTI leaders assured Mr Weidong that there was no threat to the diplomatic corps, since the sealing of the city was only meant to force the government into accepting a resulted-oriented investigation into the Panama Papers leaks, the report said. At the meeting, the PTI leaders lauded China’s ongoing support for Pakistan at all regional and international forums while Mr Khan admitted how Chinese investment was vital for Pakistan’s future.

Mr Khan also appreciated the CPEC initiative, and called it a game changer, expressing good wishes for the successful completion of the project, according to reports.

Regarding his party’s protests, Mr Khan said the PTI protests were aimed at ending corruption and promoting accountability.

The CPEC is a $51-billion project that will connect China’s Xinjiang with Pakistan’s Gwadar port in Balochistan. On Monday, Chinese envoy Sun Weidong had said if Iran were to join the CPEC project, it would be beneficial for both countries. — Agencies
