New Prince is the big winner

The Azhar Ali-trained New Prince (P. Suryaastride) held on to the lead grimly to win the Bangalore Turf Club Trophy, the feature event of the races held here on Saturday, staving off a late challenge from Smile Stone.

The jockeys protest after the first race against the suspension of rider Y.S. Srinath, who has been suspended from December 12 until end of the month and fined `25,000 for his misconduct during an enquiry, delayed the start of the second race by nearly an hour and half.

However, the Bangalore Turf Club authorities successfully conducted the nine events card by declaring apprentice riders and a sole foreign jockey, Cedric Segeon, on all the runners. In the absence of local heroes French jockey Segeon booted home a fine treble.
