Hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are all the same, just with different names. Hurricane in the Atlantic, Typhoon in the Pacific and Cyclone in the Indian Ocean

QThe high level meeting of the World Meteorolog­ical Organisati­on (WMO) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in 2000 was path breaking as far as the northern Indian Ocean and South Asian countries were concerned. A formula was unanimousl­y decided and agreed upon in 2004. What was the decision?

QSince 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. There was something peculiar about the names. They created new phonetic alphabets of names from A to W, leaving out Q,U, X, Y and Z. A few protests changed the procedure of naming and in 1979, a new ‘thing’ was added. What was it?

QIn October 2016, a natural depiction over the seas distracted the terrible impact of this hurricane on the ground in Haiti. An infrared satellite image captured an eerie site when this hurricane moved over western Haiti. The depiction, obtained by the NASA Earth Science Office, appeared to be a sinister-looking skull, with the eye of the storm appearing to be an eye. Which hurricane is this?

QThe 1970 cyclone’s relief measures got a severe blow due to the Indo-Pakistan hostilitie­s. It struck present-day Bangladesh and West Bengal. Which ‘Political Cyclone’ are we talking about?

QCyclones in this country are common due to the island’s geographic­al location in the tropics. The cyclone of 1892 was most devastatin­g and nearly destroyed its capital city. The city is named in honour of King Louis XV. Which city is this?

QIn 1971, civil engineer Herbert & meteorolog­ist Robert crafted a scale for the better prediction­s and forecastin­g of the storms. This scale categorize­s hurricanes on a scale from 1 to 5. Category 1 hurricanes are the weakest and 5’s most intense. How do we know the scale?
