New measures for combating offences is producing results, says top cop 16,602 7017

DC CORRESPONDENT The technological advancement and new measures of crime fighting by Hyderabad police department seem to be yielding significant result with 2016 recording a stunning drop in overall crime rate in Hyderabad. Rate of grievous offences like murder and robbery has gone down by 31 per cent as compared to previous year. Property offences too have dipped by 16 per cent. Though overall rate of crime against women decreased by 12 per cent, more cases of rape were reported this year.

“Crime preventive measures like Initiation of Preventive Detention (PD) Act against notorious repeated offenders, intensive visible policing, patrolling, regular cordon and search operations have yielded good results this year,” said Commissioner of Police M. Mahender Reddy.

“Effective use of criminal tracking system and installation of community CCTV projects have also helped to reducing crime,” said the commissioner citing data for this year.

Hyderabad police has detected as many 210 cases with the help of CCTV footages, he added.

The city police had detained as many as 283 criminals under the PD Act and had sent them to jail last year. These persons were involved in property offences and bodily offences and had caused trouble for the common public.

The award winning Hawk Eye app, CCTV footage enhancement system and social media presence of police and other factors helped police to improve the situation on ground.

The commissioner of police claimed that the police has also improved conviction rate in overall criminal cases in this year. “We got criminals involved in 99 major cases convicted this year. This accounts to 36 per cent rise in the conviction rates as compared to last year’s figure,” he said.

Talking about the rape cases, the commissioner said that majority of the criminals are known to the victim. “In 158 rape cases out of the 161, offenders are known to victims. 81 cases are of rape out of marriage and love affairs. Seven are incest cases and rest are committed by relatives and other acquaintances,” he said.

The police chief said that due to increase in traffic surveillance and enforcement of drunk driving, accident rates have also come down.
