Double for Srinivas

Appoorwa pocketed the women’s singles title in a one-sided final

K. Srinivas of Indian Oil dished out a spectacula­r performanc­e to earn a grand double crown by winning the men’s singles as well as doubles titles at the 3rd V. A. Sarma and V. Indiramba memorial Senior State Ranking carrom tournament hosted by the Anandnagar Welfare Associatio­n Sports Academy under the auspices of Hyderabad Carrom Associatio­n.

Internatio­nal champion Srinivas, who failed to get into the Indian team and was struggling with his form, managed to outclass Md Ahmed in the best of the three games in the men’s singles final.

Fifth seeded Srinivas lost the first game at 5-21 and was trailing 9-11 half way through the second game, but crept to 17-16 before taking the second game at 25-16 to keep himself in the match.

In the third game, Srinivas came hard at his opponent to clinch the title with a dominant 15-1 score.

Meanwhile, R. D. Dinesh Babu defeated S. Aditya of V-19 with a 25-5, 25-14 scoreline to finish third best.

Earlier, the duo of Srinivas and Basil Philips dominated S. Adithya and V. Sivananda Reddy in a marathon match that ended with the score 24-25, 24-17, 25-15 in their favour.

S. Appoorwa of LIC of India, who recently returned from Birmingham with the Women’s title of 7th World Championsh­ip, won the title comfortabl­y as she defeated Savitha Devi of Postal 20-11, 25-9.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad’s G. Madhavi had to settle for bronze in the women’s singles.

She edged past B. Suneetha of DLRL at a score of 23-15, 15-13 in a play off match of the women’s singles. OTHER RESULTS (semifinals)

Women’s singles: S. Appoorwa (LIC) bt G. Madhavi (Hyd) 25-0, 25-8; U. Savitha Devi (Postal) bt B. Suneetha (DLRL) 25-5, 22-10.

Men’s doubles: K. Srinivas (Indian Oil) & Basil Philips (Hyd) bt A. Jaikumar and L. Surya Prakash 25-12, 0-25, 25-1; V. Shivanand Reddy & S. Adithya bt Md Ahmed and Mahmood 25-12, 0-25, 25-12.

Basil Philips took the top honours with K. Srinivas in the men’s doubles. Hyderabad’s G. Madhavi had to settle for bronze in the women’s singles
