TRAVELLERS WORRY ABOUT STINK, SAFETY

- DC CORRESPONDENT

Major bus stations such as Jubilee bus station (JBS) and the massive Mahatma Gandhi bus station (MGBS) are set to experience major traffic ahead of Sankranti.

But hygiene and security remain primary concerns to several passengers. And lack of rubbish bins are forcing travellers to dispose off leftovers at platforms. Housekeeping staff have been trying their best to clean up but given the increasing passenger footfall, the job has become incredibly difficult.

At MGBS, a foul smell from the neighbouring Musi has become a constant irritant for travellers. The Chief Relation Manager (CRM) of MGBS said: “We have to manage a lot of buses. Maintainance of hygiene has become very difficult.

Kedar Yadav, a resident of Amberpet, who is traveling to Karimnagar for the festival says rubbish bins are nowhere in sight.

“There is only one dustbin at one corner and people have to walk very far to dispose the leftovers. And because many are lazy, they don’t even bother to instead, just walk and throw it on the platforms.”

Also, the security as JBS needs to be made on par with MGBS. JBS doesn’t even have a metal detector. And both the bus stations don’t have any baggage scanners.

“Whenever, there’s a surge ahead of a big festival, security at these bus stations is beefed up by city officials. The CCTV camera system is also functional and has been serving its purpose. But baggage scanners need be installed immediately,” B. Purshottam, a police officer said.
