The missing park in Alwal has been found. TRS city president Mynampally Hanumanth Rao has written to the GHMC Alwal circle office saying he has been mistakenly identified as the owner of the building constructed on a plot meant for the park.

The former MP said the GHMC should hand over the building to Venkateshwara Colony Residents’ Welfare Association as it belongs to them. The colony residents will benefit from the deal and will get a badminton court (which is in the building). The building won’t be demolished.

On February 21, 2017, Deccan Chronicle had published a story titled ‘Alwal Park goes missing’. This followed an unusual police complaint filed by one P.M. Sai Prasad, who alleged that the space adjacent to Plot No. 13, Survey No. 182 at Golnaka, is marked as green space in the blueprint of the layout, but there was no park there. The story alerted residents of Venkateshwara Colony, who pursued the matter with the GHMC.

The fallout was the letter (which is in the possession of this newspaper) from Mr Hanumanth Rao addressed to the GHMC commissioner which says: ‘There is a mistaken entry in records of GHMC Alwal regarding ownership of the premises. I am no way in possession or ownership of the said premises; my name is being dragged into this matter. It is true that my late father and others had contributed their time and money to make the present badminton court (building) and hence it belongs to the housing society. I ask the officer concerned to remove my name from tax records of the premises and allow the colony to continue to maintain and use it.”

However, Mr Sai Prasad, who complained about the missing park, questioned the GHMC on how property tax was being collected from Mr Rao when the building had no building approval.

“GHMC officials didn’t take any action when the park was encroached. How could the municipal officials serve property tax and issue door number to the encroached park without building approval? Is the GHMC not working hand in glove with illegal building owners,” he asked.

Either way, the housing society is happy that the controversy has ended in a manner that will enable badminton players to practice in the premises under the control of the society.
