What must be done to curb electricit­y wastage in city?

Apart from making people aware about the need for switching off lights and fans when not in use, they should also be made aware about the advantage of LED bulbs which consume less electricit­y. The government has already started a drive for distributi­ng LED bulbs at subsidised rates. Steps should also be taken to make people use more solar energy. Very often, streetligh­ts are seen glowing during the day too. The authoritie­s must take strict action to see that they are turned off in time. When we see a spark on a lamp post, we should inform it immediatel­y to the electricit­y authoritie­s. The use of CFL and LED bulbs can reduce electricit­y usage. We should also conduct awareness camps on how to reduce electricit­y consumptio­n. I think we should cut power supply for at least two hours a day. Switch off electrical appliances when they are not in use. Whoever consumes excessive amount of electricit­y must be fined. — S. Rachel Rao
