TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday said that Sangareddy was finalised as the venue for the Congress public meeting on June 1 as the party has a strong sentiments attached to the place.

In a statement here, Mr Reddy said that it was in January 1980 that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi contested from Medak and was elected to 7th Lok Sabha. “Almost 38 years later, the Congress has selected the same location in Sangareddy from where Indira Gandhi addressed her election meeting to hold its “Telangana Praja Garjana” that would be addressed by AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi on June 1,” Mr Reddy said.

“A lot of sentiments are attached to the venue of Praja Garjana. It proved to be the launch pad for the revival of Congress across the country in 1980. Indira Gandhi picked Medak as her second constituency to contest the election. Although she registered a landslide victory from Rae Bareli too, she retained the Medak seat. She served as country’s Prime Minister as Medak MP and remained so till her assassination in 1984,” Mr Reddy said.

He said that the Congress did a lot of brainstorming before finalising the venue for public meeting. Instead of making it only a show of strength, the TPCC finalised a venue that also had strong sentimental value. The venue emotionally links each and every Congress worker and sympathiser with the party and its leadership, he said.

Mr Reddy also informed that the party would be organising a photo exhibition on Indira Gandhi’s election from Medak Lok Sabha seat at the public meeting venue. Mr Rahul Gandhi will first go through the photo exhibition and then begin his speech after paying floral tributes to Indira Gandhi, the TPCC chief said.
