Shramdaan, tweets fall on GHMC’s deaf ears
Can anything move the GHMC? Citizens have been using shramdaans and tweets as a means to open the eyes of the civic authorities. However, these efforts have fallen on the deaf ears. The latest shramdaan at Neredmet has still not got a positive response from the GHMC.
“Last Sunday, when we contacted the authorities to provide us with the materials to fill the potholes, they said they did not have the stock. We were forced to go ahead with the mud and hoped that the authorities will start the maintenance works soon,” noted Mr Chandrashekhar, a resident of Sainikpuri.
“However, even after the second effort, there is still no official response,” he added.
Residents of Kothaguda also echoed similar views.
“The GHMC is always tight-lipped and always goes for short-term remedies,” said Mr Ramanjeet Singh, who has done multiple shramdaans on Kothaguda and Manjeera roads.
The GHMC, on the other hand, has a different take on this and ruled out any delay in repairing the roads.
“The contractor, PN Constructions, has to look after multiple roads. The work would start in a week. The delay is also caused due to the rains,” said Mr Nainee Kaushik, assistant engineer with the GHMC.
However, the authorities did not answer why the repairing works were stretched to the monsoons.
A group of citizens from the west zone have started a twitter hashtag #WhyThisKolaveri to shame the government for the poor planning and delay in repairing major roads.
“Shramdaans may work for potholes. But in the financial district we have major issues related to land acquisition on the arterial roads,” said Mr Uma Mahesh, an IT employee.
